The sound montage of the bar's voices is a fun device, and helps establish a lot of characters quickly. Are you getting an idea of how this isn't like other shows? Paquin is terrific as Sookie, a girl who is almost pathologically positive and sunny, despite the burden of hearing everyone else's thoughts all the time. She also happens to be psychic – and possibly telekinetic. She's a good Christian southern lady who works in a bar. But that never occurs to Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin). To be fair, it's kind of understandable from my provincial 21st century point of view to be a bit wary of undead people who eat people. It helps that this is the south and there are redneck characters, black characters and gay (and black) characters to underscore the new prejudice in town. It doesn't hit on it too hard, and the times it does – it's as a joke. Sure, it's a metaphor for prejudice and discrimination – but it's handled well. Now, vampires are trying to be integrated into human society. At some point, vampires were discovered to be real, and a synthetic blood developed by the Japanese and marketed as "True Blood," provides vampires with all the nutrients they need so as not to need to drink from living humans. The pilot introduces us to a host of characters living on the outskirts of Louisiana. Nonetheless, something tells me that John Waters will be very amused by True Blood. It veers into camp territory without ever fully embracing it. It's not like that - at all.Īnna Paquin and Stephen Moyer in True Blood For one thing, this show never, ever takes itself seriously. It seemed arrogant and presumptuous – but now it makes perfect sense. This wasn't going to be like that, he said. He'd never seen Buffy or Angel, or read the Anne Rice novels. ![]() When writer/creator Alan Ball first talked to the press about the series I was put off by his cavalier rejection of vampire fiction that had come before. This is not a typical vampire show by any stretch of the imagination. ![]() I kept waiting for the suck (I know, the pun, it's there – deal with it) – but it never happened. Fifteen minutes in I wasn't hating it – I was actually quite liking it. Then I was surprised when I started laughing at some sly and intentional comedy. ![]() I was surprised that the beginning didn't put me off. But, deadlines being what they are – the time came when I simply could not put it off any longer. I kept putting it off, knowing how everyone reacted I didn't want to sit through an hour of garbage. However, the task of actually reviewing the show fell to me.
